Dr. Jeffrey Tocci has been practicing dentistry for more than 30 years. He received certification in surgical dental implantology and temporomandibular joint disorder treatment from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Tufts University of Dental Medicine. Jeffrey Tocci, DDS, who received his doctor of dental surgery degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry, is the owner of Tocci Dental Associates in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and offers his patients the laser dentistry option.

Laser dentistry, which is approved for practice by the Food and Drug Administration, has been used to treat tooth decay, gum disease, and lesion removal since 1994. Delivering energy through a highly focused beam of light, lasers have a multitude of uses in dentistry. In a surgical setting, lasers can assist in cutting or vaporizing oral tissue. Other uses include the “curing” or strengthening of tooth filling bonds and as a teeth whitening bleaching agent.

The advantages laser dentistry has over traditional dental drilling are that it minimizes swelling and bleeding, is less painful and thereby reduces the need for anesthesia, and preserves more of the patient’s tooth during cavity extractions. Although this procedure may seem to be a better alternative when compared to dental drilling, laser dentistry is costly. Research shows that clinical laser machinery costs $42,000 on average, whereas the traditional drill technology averages only $600.
